I've only driven on one occasion in my entire life, and yet I already have an uncontrollable desire to wield a baseball bat and bash the heads in of people who floor the throttle and turn left at an intersection the moment the light turns green, cutting everyone else off. THERE IS NO EXCUSE.

Ever since I got my licence, I've been nitpicking everyone's driving a bit. For example, a Sonata almost cut me off this morning without a signal.

I have a thing against people who can't navigate a traffic circle. On more than one occasion have I nearly been t-boned because people think they don't have to yield for FUCKING ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I've nearly came unglued to the point of grabbing my baseball bat..

Ohh trust me you will see some stupid shit the more you drive. It is part of the reason I don't really have faith in humanity. Anytime I go out it is like an adventure, I get to ask myself questions like, will that person understand what a stop sign means? It isn't often but once in a while I will encounter the person who thinks it is okay to be talking on their phone while searching for something in the glove box as they roll along at 30mph... I don't mind if someone cut me off by accident, but if it is like the person you described or someone driving distracted it really makes me wish I could put them in a room of dangerous things and let Darwinism do its thing.

When you turn left in front of traffic it's called a Jersey Swoop. And if that traffic is slow enough off the line, it's their fault. As long as the person doesn't actually impede traffic, I'm pretty sure it's legal.

Not entirely. I've had that happen to me when I was going just as the light changed, and let me tell you that was an interestingly close call.
Most of the time that I've seen it, it's outright dangerous. The few times I see it due to a distracted driver in the oncoming lane, I've understood. It's just that those times are the exception and not the rule.

There is an unprotected left a few blocks from my house that this happens at way too often. One day I was turning right through the intersection, and having the right of way, started to go. One car turning left decided to try and get ahead of me, which they barely did. The car behind them seemed to think that because the car ahead did an illegal turn, they should too, and zoomed through to almost hit the side of my car.
The driver of car #2 (that almost hit me) was irate! How dare I cut him off! After honking and screaming out his window at me, he pulled up next to me at the next intersection and proceeded to let me know what he thought until he was red in the face (literally.. the guy had a vein sticking out of his forehead..it was quite comical).
I let him know that left turn yields at an unprotected intersection and that somebody of his advanced age should better know the law. He did not have a coherent response and threatened to kick my ass. I told him that I'd be happy to pull over up ahead and we can call the police to sort this out. Surprisingly, he thought this was a good idea so I said I'd pull over in the lot ahead and make the call. Unsurprisingly, in the half-block from the light he decided that maybe it wasn't a good idea and kept driving after I pulled over.

It can be annoying. But here, the line to turn left at one choice intersection can literally be over a mile long. I've seen it 2.5 miles long before. That's approximately 422 cars waiting at 30/ft per roadway per car. As long as they give 'er, I don't really mind if they squeeze in an extra car. Just giv'er that's all.

9 times out of ten it's an asshole cutting in, but if I'm first in line turning left, and I can see the opposing driver not even looking up (and not even moving), I'll scoot. There's NO reason I need to wait for a car which isn't moving.
Call me selfish or what have you, I don't care. Happens less than once a month probably.

If everyone in the oncoming lane(s) is obviously distracted, then I think it's acceptable provided you're not creating a dangerous situation.

Agreed. And that's the only time I do it/will defend someone else doing it. I was just clarifying that it IS possible to turn left ahead of oncoming traffic.

I guess it's legal, but it's really dangerous. Everytime I see it happen, even when I'm just walking, the oncoming traffic is already moving.

I get super aggressive with those assholes and race them to the t bone point then brake hard. Usually get to see fear in their eyes. It's very satisfying.

No, because Jersey's state motto is "What the hell are you looking at?", everyone is MA is a MASShole, and NY is completely tainted by NYC.
In the South, it's worse, not because people think they should always go first, but because they do things to honestly make you think "Have you EVER driven a car before today?"

In Philly and Pittsburgh, that's often SOP for small intersections in heavy traffic with no left turn arrow signal. It lets two cars turn left per cycle, one right at the start and one when the light turns yellow/red.
Heard it called a "Pittsburgh left" and a "Jersey cut."
I'm sure it happens elsewhere of course...

O I do this whenever possible. Life is too short to sit still at a green light and in any case that's about the only time I can come close to the limits of adhesion in my Z on the street.
